House Passes Bill to Block Migrants with DUI Convictions

House majority leader says the seriousness of the crime should result in deportation.

The House recently passed a bill with bipartisan support that prohibits noncitizens convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) from permanent admission to the United States and would make them subject to deportation.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise stated about this bill, “With the seriousness of the crime and the potential deadly consequences, you would think that if an illegal immigrant was caught driving under the influence, they would be deported and barred from reentering the country – unfortunately, however, that is not always the case.”

This legislation comes in the wake of bipartisan attention toward the border policies of President Biden’s administration. The guidance directs Border Patrol officers to focus on deporting those that are most deemed a public safety threat. The House majority party said that DUIs should be specifically listed as a reason for consistent deportation, prompting the drafting and passage of the legislation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Scalise to be led by the Lord as they set the priorities of the House of Representatives.
  • For the majority and minority leaders in the Senate to receive God’s direction as they forge legislative deals.
